ORLANDO, Fla. – Solar lights are becoming more and more popular because they don’t require an electrical connection. But how do you mount them outside your house on a concrete wall? The drill bit is the key!
We purchased:
Solar security light
We brought with us:
Concrete drill bit
Hammer drill
Screwdriver
Plastic wall anchors and screws
Pencil
We recommend:
A hammer drill
Electric screwdriver
Step 1
Plan out placement. Decide where you want to install the solar light and then place it in that spot to make sure it fits and will shine light everywhere you want it. Then place the lamp mounting bracket on the wall where it will go and use a pencil to mark drill holes.
Step 2
Drill.
This is where you need a concrete drill bit! How do you know it’s for concrete? It’ll always say it on the packaging but you can also tell because the tip of the bit has wings (for cutting concrete).
Make sure your drill bit is just slightly smaller than the wall anchors you’ll need to insert into the holes. Drill holes into the concrete deep enough (usually 2″ is fine) for the wall anchors to sit flush up against the wall. I recommend using a hammer drill if you can get your hands on one because the hammering action makes drilling through concrete easier.
Step 3
Place the wall anchors into the holes. You may need a hammer to tap in the anchors.
Step 4
Place the lamp mounting bracket over the holes and anchors and screw the screws through the bracket and into the anchors. They should get tight as the wall anchor expands inside the wall.
Step 5
Place the lamp over the mounting bracket and tighten down the thumb screws. Aim the light towards the driveway and solar panel towards the sun.
