ORLANDO, Fla. – Are you a coffee person or a wine person? (Or maybe both, depending on the time of day.)
While some of you may depend on coffee to keep you up, and sip wine to wind down, they have more in common than you think.

Barnie’s Coffee in Winter Park is sharing the science behind brewing and fermenting for a good cause.
“The roasting process is a chemical reaction. To get from raw material to this roasted product which is the dark beans that you see,” said Head Coffee Roaster Christian Jose-Morrison.
Jose-Morrison said the process is much like wine, starting as a fruit then heated up to promote a chemical reaction. For wine, the grapes are cooked with yeast, converting the juice into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Coffee starts as a fruit as well, then the beans are extracted and roasted -- another chemical reaction.
But they differ in the way they make you feel.
“Coffee has caffeine in it that gives you that chemical in your brain to keep you up. Wine has a chemical in it like a depressant to bring you down,” said VP of Marketing, Shannon Wolfgang.
Now to the good cause I mentioned earlier. Barnie’s will be one of the presenters at the Orlando Science Center for their annual Science & Wine fundraiser.
“A lot of people don’t realize the Orlando Science Center is a nonprofit organization. We are a nonprofit dedicated to inspiring science learning for life. We have a very active outreach program, not just going to schools, but visit local neighborhood centers,” said Jeff Stanford. VP of Marketing for the Orlando Science Center “The funds that we raise through events like Science & Wine go to create access, so everybody can enjoy and learn through engaging science activities especially those who may not be able to get to Orlando Science Center.”
More than a dozen local restaurants will be serving up popular dishes alongside wine and champagne for the event with live music, hands-on demonstrations and full access to what the Orlando Science Center already offers.
Organizers say the unique event captures the attention of adults who want to give a toast to the continued education and outreach of the Orlando Science Center.
Science & Wine takes place Saturday, April 26, 2025 at the Orlando Science Center from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Click HERE to purchase tickets.
Barnie’s Coffee is partnering with OSC for the event, for a special presentation on coffee and wine. Even pairing the two for their Red Wine Coffee Spritzer.
