ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A new pedestrian bridge may be coming to a busy Orange County intersection in the heart of the International Drive tourist district.
The proposed bridge would serve the four corners of the International Drive and Sand Lake Road intersection, officials from Orange County said.

The International Drive Pedestrian Overpass Intersection Analysis and Overpass Conceptual Design Study “is being undertaken to create an iconic feature that enhances pedestrian and bicycle safety at the busy intersection,” according to the release.

Officials said the study will evaluate and recommend measures to preserve existing street level crosswalks, drainage, lighting, signage, signalization and major utility relocation improvements that will address the existing and future demands of all modes of transportation.
According to the release, the study started in spring 2022 and is expected to be complete in spring 2023.
Additionally, the release read in part that the “aesthetic gateway design will contemplate other special treatments to draw motorists’ awareness to the architectural significance of the I-4 and Sand Lake Road Interchange improvements.”
“Orange County is continuing to evaluate concepts for designing a pedestrian overpass across Sand Lake Road at International Drive with the goals of improving pedestrian safety and creating an aesthetic gateway to one of Orange County’s most-heavily traveled tourism corridors,” a statement issued Monday from the Orange County Transportation Planning Division said.
Officials said a community meeting will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 2, at the Embassy Suites located at 8250 Jamaican Court in Orlando starting at 5:30 p.m. to present the proposed concept to the public.
Maps and displays of the project will be available for public review and comment and members of the project team will be on site to answer questions.
