ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – As housing costs continue to challenge families across Central Florida, Altamonte Springs is making strides to ease the burden.
A recent Zillow report ranks the city No. 49 in Florida for affordable housing — the highest ranking in Seminole County.
Now, a new affordable housing complex is reinforcing that reputation. On Friday, city and county leaders will gather to celebrate the grand opening of Banyan Eastown Apartments, a 92-unit community designed for working families earning 60% or less of the area median income, which is just over $64,000.
Located at 1010 Merritt Street, near the Altamonte Springs SunRail station, the complex includes one- and two-bedroom units in energy-efficient, three-story buildings with elevators. Amenities include a clubhouse, fitness center, computer lab, and meeting rooms.

But beyond housing, the development is also focused on long-term support for its residents. Free on-site programs in adult literacy, financial management and job readiness will be offered to help families build economic stability.
“This is about more than just rent prices — it’s about giving families stability and opportunity in Seminole County,” said Shannon Young, executive director of Seminole County Housing.
The project is a collaboration between the city, Seminole County, the Florida Housing Finance Corporation, Truist Bank, and Banyan Development Group.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday and will include tours of the model apartment and community facilities.
As Seminole County continues to grow, local officials say projects like this one are essential to ensuring that affordability isn’t just a statistic but a priority.
