Boys Scouts are among the specialty plates being discontinued

Back in October, a new Florida law introduced a handful of new specialty plates to the state’s repertoire.

But while so many new plates are being made available for Florida drivers, others have had to be let go.

A couple weeks after that law went into effect, Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) announced that it was deauthorizing 15 other specialty license plate pre-sale vouchers that failed to meet their quotas. They are as follows:

  • Beat Childhood Cancer
  • Dan Marino Campus
  • Jumbo Shrimp
  • Florida 4-H
  • Daughters of the American
  • Thank a Lineman
  • Donate Life Florida
  • Revolution
  • Give Kids the World
  • Rotary
  • American Eagles
  • Marine Corps League
  • Highwaymen
  • Guardian Ad Litem
  • Florida Native

However, one organization — Florida State Beekeepers Association — was granted a 1-year extension to meet the requirements.

Meanwhile, five other specialty license plates were discontinued last month after they failed to breach 3,000 plate registrations for over a year, the FLHSMV reported. Those five plates include the following:

  • A State of Vision
  • Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches
  • Keep Kids Drug Free
  • Scouting Teaches Values — Boys Scouts
  • Special Olympics

Another plate for the University of North Florida was discontinued back in February for the same reason, having only 1,558 valid registrations as of the start of 2024.

A vehicle owner who was already issued one of these discontinued plates is allowed to keep using the plate for the rest of its 10-year replacement cycle. In addition, the driver will no longer be charged the annual specialty plate fee that the FLHSMV typically distributes to each plate’s respective organization.
