ORLANDO, Fla. – A state program to help homeowners make upgrades to their homes against severe weather has leftover cash and now applicants have another chance to apply.

Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis says homeowners for about 30,000 properties inspected through the My Safe Florida Home program application process never finished the age and income survey.

Patronis says that means there’s over $100 million in existing funds left over.

That is an important step toward getting a grant of up to $10,000 to help pay for upgrades to a home, such as hurricane-resistant windows and doors or reinforced roof-to-wall attachments.

The survey is required by law because senior citizens and low-income Floridians get first priority for those grants.

The My Safe Florida Home program website is now open for anyone who has already completed an eligible initial inspection to create an account and complete the age and income survey.

The portal will be open through April 30.

To complete the survey, go to the My Safe Florida Home website, then:

  • Click on the link to “Access Current Account”
  • Answer the survey questions in the Applicant Portal
  • Check your email for updates

Thousands of homes have received grants for upgrades, which have also made them eligible for mandatory discounts on their property insurance.

The My Safe Florida Home program quickly runs out of money every year because of its popularity.

The state legislature is looking at another cash infusion for the program in the budget this year. There are also bills to create a trust fund to keep the program going.
