Stop domestic violence: News 6 teams up with Harbor House for fundraising event

Viewers donate more than $8,000

Harbor House virtual fundraiser

ORLANDO, Fla. – In an effort to eliminate domestic violence, News 6 teamed up with Harbor House to host a virtual fundraising event on Thursday.

Every dollar raised will provide a new beginning and help ensure the safety of survivors at Harbor House of Central Florida. Thanks to generous viewers, $8,500 was donated to the cause Thursday.

According to the latest statistics, one in three women and one in four men will experience abuse at the hands of a partner.

Harbor House is more than a shelter. While best known for its emergency services, Harbor House is also out in the community offering wraparound services and legal support.

The courthouse program saw a jump in its numbers, especially during the coronavirus pandemic. Many survivors are afraid to the shelter because of COVID-19, but there have been no known cases in the shelter, according to Harbor House.

Below are the fiscal year-end statistics for Harbor House from July 2019 – June 2020:

  • Shelter – 728 (-21%)
  • Bed Nights – 30,917 (+1%)
  • Kennel – 38 (+111%)
  • Crisis Calls – 6,489 (+2%)

Agency

  • Services – 74,089 (+1%)
  • Referrals – 22,553 (+3%)
  • DV Trainings – 177 (+47%)
  • Court/Injunction for Protection – 855 (+27%); between Janurary-June 2020 – 516
