UPDATE: 3 men wounded when 30 shots fired into car outside Sanford home

Police say victims refuse to prosecute

SANFORD, Fla. – Three men, all of whom are 18 years old, were shot Monday night while sitting in a vehicle in the driveway of a Sanford home, according to police.

Sanford police said officers responded to the shooting at 9:43 p.m. in the 1300 block of Summerlin Avenue near Hamilton Elementary School and Rescue Daycare.

Police said an investigation shows a dark-colored SUV approached the victims’ car and at least 30 shots were fired at them.

Investigators said the victims were rushed to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

All three victims spoke with officers and investigators, but they elected not to prosecute, according to police.

Police said investigators will continue to try to identify and arrest anyone involved in the shooting.

“We have worked very hard over the years to build and maintain trust within our community,” Sanford police Chief Cecil Smith said. “We will continue to strive for open and honest communication and work together to solve these injustices within our community.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Sanford Police Department or Crimeline at 800 423-TIPS.

Karlecia Hartsfield, whose children attend Rescue Daycare, said it’s not the first shooting in the area.

“I do think that they should probably patrol this area a little bit more (because there is) a day care right here,” she said. “They’re shooting recklessly, so bullets can go anywhere. Bullets could have entered the day care and then people who have kids (who) go here wouldn’t have had anywhere to take our kids.”

Francisco Rivera, who lives nearby, said the shooting is very concerning.

“It’s just really nonsense to be out here shooting at other people over, probably, not even legitimate things,” he said. “Certain people don’t really act the way they should act and that’s when things occur and bad things happen.”

Rivera said he’d also like to see more officers in the area.

“If they probably patrolled a little bit more or patrolled the dangerous areas a little bit more, maybe this stuff won’t happen,” he said.
