The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to the area and found the boy, who was pronounced dead at the scene after officers rendered aid.
Investigators identified the victim as Jesus Ramirez. Deputies believe the shooting was not a random attack.
Orange County Public Schools said in a statement Ramirez last attended Lakeview Middle School.
“We are saddened to hear of the loss of one of our students. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as they go through this extremely difficult time,” the statement read.
The district said it will make grief counselors available to students and staff.
Video from the scene shows several sheriff’s vehicles and yellow tape outside a home.
“It’s scary to have kids in this neighborhood because the violence is out of control,” a neighbor said.
No other details have been released.
