Family, attorney say more safeguards could have prevented Miya Marcano’s death

Woman’s body found over 1 week since she was last seen

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – The family and attorney of Miya Marcano held a press conference Sunday, saying they are working to hold anyone responsible and accountable for her disappearance, and called for more safeguards where she lived and worked.

Search crews found the body in a wooded area near Tymber Skan Condominiums off South Texas Avenue, according to Orange County Sheriff John Mina.

Marcano was last seen around 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, at the Arden Villas Apartments near the University of Central Florida. Armando Caballero, the person of interest in her disappearance, was a maintenance worker at Arden Villas since June, according to officials.

Officials said a maintenance-issued master key fob, which Caballero was known to be in possession of, was used to enter her apartment around 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 24. Investigators announced days after her disappearance that Caballero was found dead at a Seminole County apartment complex.

The family has retained well-known civil rights attorney Daryl Washington.

“We are looking at all legal remedies that’s available to the family, because It’s very clear there was some negligence in this case,” Washington said.

Washington said the apartment complex can do more to keep all residents safe.

“We’ve had the opportunity to talk to young girls who are college students, young girls who are tenants at the Arden villas apartments and people are living in fear because what happened to Miya could have easily happened to one of them,” he said.

Mina said over 60 detectives worked exclusively on this case. The FBI also joined local agencies this week to assist in the investigation.

“We are not looking for any other people. We believe, pretty conclusively, that Armando Caballero is responsible for this crime and there’s not any other person or persons that we are looking for in this case,” he said.

Washington said that Caballero shouldn’t have had access to Marcano’s apartment.

An autopsy is being to done to determine how Marcano died.

On online petition signed by many residents at Arden Villas apartments are calling for more safeguards too.

A spokesperson for Arden Villas said last week in part the complex is taking proactive steps to enhance security, including repositioning a guard at the front gate and upgrading its maintenance procedures to an online appointment system.

“A technician from our gate vendor will be out this afternoon to work on the entrance gate of the community,” said the Arden Villas team in an e-mail sent out to residents on Monday. “Once the technician assesses the gate, we will send out additional information.”

If the gate is not working by Monday night, the Arden Villas third-party security company plans to check the IDs of all vehicles passing through, the e-mail continued.
