New incentives and hiring bonuses were announced Wednesday for Florida correctional officers, according to a release from the governor’s office.
Gov. Ron DeSantis’s office said hiring bonuses of up to $5,000 will be offered by the state and the Florida Department of Corrections.

“As so many cities and states choose to disrespect, degrade and defund the work of law enforcement, we want Florida to continue valuing our men and women of law enforcement today, tomorrow and for generations to come,” DeSantis said in a release. “This year, we have prioritized initiatives to recruit and reward high quality officers, especially corrections officers, and these new bonuses, effective immediately, will help support public safety positions within the Florida Department of Corrections.”
According to the release, a $3,000 new hire bonus would be offered for all new correctional officers and a $1,000 bonus would be offered for correctional officers to join “high vacancy institutions” or for certified correctional officer applicants.
In addition to the incentives, the starting salary for corrections officers will be raised to $38,750 starting in January 2022.
