BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – On Wednesday, the 18th Judicial Circuit Court granted bond to a Titusville woman accused of killing a foster child in her care.

Lakeisha Mitchell, 41, who faces a first-degree murder charge after her 4-year-old foster child was found dead in August 2021, was awarded a $135,000 bond.

According to a police report, Mitchell said she believed the girl was pretending to be asleep, so she placed her, fully clothed, in a bathtub full of water to get her to stop.

She said she left the bathroom, and when she returned, the girl was laying facedown in the water, and her lips were blue, the report added.

After arriving at Parrish Medical Center, doctors observed injuries on the girl, including a bruise on her left eye, bruising around her face, multiple scratches to her through among other injuries, not consistent with Mitchell’s account, according to the report.

Mitchell was arrested in August on felony child abuse charges and subsequently charged with first-degree murder in September.

According to the court’s statement, she will be placed on GPS monitoring, 24-hour community supervision and other restrictions upon her release.

Prosecutors issued a statement following the order expressing their concern and disagreeing with the decision.
