Bicyclist struck, killed by pickup in Brevard hit-and-run, troopers say

Fatal crash investigated on SR-A1A and Harmony Place

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A bicyclist died after being struck by a pickup truck in a hit-and-run crash in Brevard County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash happened on State Road A1A and Harmony Place just before 10 a.m. Tuesday. According to a report, a 57-year-old Ohio man was biking north on SR-A1A when the pickup hit him.

Investigators said the victim was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Troopers said Brevard County deputies and Melbourne police located the suspected Dodge Dakota truck and driver, identified as 32-year-old Kevin Shamoy Percell, involved in the crash about three miles away.

Witnesses told troopers the pickup truck fled north on SR-A1A, according to the report.

‘’He just made a very poor decision,’’ Lt. Channing Taylor said. ‘’He said he got freaked out.’’

Taylor said Percell, an employee of Brevard Pools when driving his work vehicle on his way to a job when hit the bicyclist.

‘’The driver seems to be remorseful. He just admits he made a mistake and he got really scared,’’ Taylor said.

Percell is charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving a death. FHP said Percell was not impaired.

No information on the bicyclist has been made available.

The investigation is ongoing.
