WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. – A man claiming to have a bomb triggered an evacuation at a West Melbourne bank Tuesday morning, Deputy Police Chief Richard Cordeau said.

West Melbourne police converged on TD Bank at 3125 W. New Haven Ave., arrested the suspect, and transported him to the hospital for medical evaluation, according to News 6 partner Florida Today.

“He was acting erratic and just kept repeating that he had a bomb. And he wanted us to call the FBI,” Cordeau said, standing outside the bank.

“Our officers actually evacuated the employees for their safety — because he started making threats to jump over the counter,” he said.

The incident was reported just after 9:50 a.m. The bank branch is located just west of the Minton Road intersection. No injuries were reported.

The suspect left a duffel bag just outside the bank’s western exterior door. A police officer photographed the bag while processing the scene after the arrest.

TD Bank personnel gathered outside the building declined comment amid the evacuation.

Cordeau said police were already en route to Wawa next door because the same person had just caused a disturbance there.

He did not have information immediately available on the suspect’s identity or potential criminal charges.
