Estimated cost of damage could rise, county says

MARION COUNTY, Fla. – Marion County leaders released an update Monday afternoon on the damage done Saturday by an EF-1 tornado that cut a path of destruction.

Sheriff Billy Wood and Commissioner Carl Zalak released a video on Facebook to provide details of the clean-up effort.

According to the pair, the county property appraiser, Jimmy Cowan, estimated the property loss at $12.3 million, adding that this figure could rise.

“This preliminary estimate includes structural damage, loss of personal property and the cost of debris removal,” Zalak said.

The sheriff said no one was hurt during the powerful storm, which had winds reaching 110 mph.

Marion County emergency management has set up its citizen information line to help answer any questions. The number is 352-369-7500 and is open until 9 p.m.

The county said blue tarps are available at Central Christian Church, located at 3010 NE 14th St.

In its damage survey, NWS Jacksonville said the 200-yard-wide tornado traveled a path of approximately 25 miles from Dunnellon to Ocala over 28 minutes. As with police, the NWS reported no fatalities or injuries in the event.

Ocala police said the damage happened near the 3900 block of State Road 200.

Details in the NWS damage report describe many uprooted trees in the north and east sides of Ocala, a toppled billboard and peeled building siding near Dunnellon, downed power lines and damage to numerous residences, including an apartment building.
