Brevard teacher arrested on charges of sending harmful material to a child

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A Brevard County middle school teacher was arrested Wednesday on charges of sending harmful material to a child, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies said Joseph Komjathy, 40, a teacher at Stone Middle School in Melbourne, was arrested on five counts of distribution of harmful material to a minor and one count of unlawful use of a two-way communication device.

Brevard Public Schools said Thursday that Komjathy has been placed on leave and the process of terminating his employment is underway.

“BPS will work closely with law enforcement during the course of the investigation of the allegations against this individual. We will follow our protocols and proceed with any and all appropriate measures as more information becomes available,” BPS said in a statement.

Parents were alerted of the teacher’s arrest via a message, which said, in part, “The safety of our students remains our highest priority.”

No other details were released by the sheriff’s office.
