ORLANDO, Fla. – A woman was hospitalized after crashing her car into a tree July 25 in Orlando, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the woman — later identified as 40-year-old Orinthia Thomas — crashed along Universal Boulevard and Pointe Plaza Avenue at approximately 12:27 p.m.

Troopers said Thomas “failed to negotiate a curve” and traveled into the center median, striking a traffic control sign and a palm tree.

After crashing into the tree, the vehicle then caught fire, and Thomas was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center as a trauma alert, troopers said.

According to troopers, Thomas was in critical condition. They added that there were no reported passengers or other vehicles involved in the crash.

Troopers said Thomas died more than two weeks later at the hospital on Aug. 10.

Ernest Jordan, a man who identified himself as Thomas’ fiancé, told News 6 that Thomas’ mother has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for Thomas’ funeral expenses.
