Seminole County schools to preview social studies classroom materials

District is encouraging parents to join materials adoption committees

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – Seminole County Public Schools is inviting members of the public to attend a preview event Thursday evening to look at instructional materials for the district’s social studies classes, district officials said.

The event will give parents and other members of the community a chance to inspect the materials, which are under consideration, SCPS announced in a release.

According to the district, publishers of these materials will also be available during the meeting, along with preview copies of their textbooks.

District officials said instructional materials adoption committees will be convened for the following courses and subject areas:

  • Social Studies (K-5)
  • Civics (6-8)
  • World History (6-8)
  • U.S. History (6-8)
  • World History (9-12)
  • U.S. History (9-12)
  • U.S. Government (9-12)
  • Economics (9-12)
  • Personal Financial Literacy (9-12)
  • African American History (9-12)

The district is seeking parents of SCPS students to serve on the adoption committees, officials said. According to SCPS, meetings for instructional materials adoption committees will be open to the public, and parents can fill out a participation form to apply.

Adoption committees will have their results presented to the district superintendent, who will then submit adoption recommendations for consideration at a later school board meeting for selection, approval and further adoption, officials added.

The preview event is scheduled from 5 - 7 p.m. Thursday in the SCPS Educational Support Center, located at 400 E. Lake Mary Blvd. in Sanford.
