Sanford restaurant damaged by Hurricane Ian

Awning at St. Johns River Steak & Seafood torn up by storm

SANFORD, Fla. – A seafood restaurant in Sanford was damaged as Hurricane Ian moved through Central Florida Wednesday night into Thursday.

News 6 reporter Troy Campbell arrived at St. Johns River Steak & Seafood early Thursday morning where a metal awning at the restaurant was mangled by the wind.

The restaurant is located at 550 N. Palmetto Ave. near the Downtown Sanford Marina on Lake Monroe.

Campbell showed the large chunks of metal from the awning scattered across the road and resting up against the building. The awning could be heard scraping on the asphalt as the wind pushed it further down the road.

Water from Lake Monroe and gusts pummeled the building.

The restaurant announced it would close Wednesday morning ahead of Ian’s landfall along the southwest coast of Florida.

Campbell reported seeing multiple transformers exploding as he and his photographer made their way to the Sanford area; however, the power appears to remain on in the area around Lake Monroe.

Seminole County is expected to see winds between 70 and 90 mph as Ian moves through the area along with 10 to 15 inches of rain.

Ian wreaked havoc on much of Southwest and Central Florida, hitting the state as a Category 4 hurricane with sustained wind speeds topping 150 mph.
