Suspect shot and killed during Orange County burglary, deputies say

Man was shot and killed by the homeowner

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A man was shot and killed Thursday morning at a home in Orange County in what the homeowner is now saying was a burglary in process, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

The fatal shooting happened on Ponderosa Drive off Hoffner Avenue, near Goldenrod Road.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said there was an altercation between the homeowner and someone else and a “firearm was discharged.”

Sheriff’s officials later identified the man that was pronounced dead at the scene as 31-year-old Jose Enrique Benavides Montero. Deputies said that Montero was shot by the resident of the home during what the resident claimed was a burglary in progress.

The resident stayed at the scene and has cooperated with the investigation, which is active and ongoing, according to the sheriff’s office.

A neighbor said he heard about five or six gunshots.
