Polk County deputies warn of scam involving sale of US Treasury bonds

Officials say to only purchase the bonds through the US Treasury, a trusted broker or banker

Polk County deputies are warning residents about a scam involving the sale of U.S. Treasury Bond (Polk County Sheriff's Office)

POLK COUNTY, Fla. – The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a scam involving the sale of U.S. Treasury bonds that is “making its way through our communities.”

In a social media post on Tuesday, deputies said those responsible for the scam are presenting themselves as someone selling the bonds.

According to the post, the scammers request personal information, such as a birth certificate copy, Social Security card, driver’s license and bank account information.

Deputies said a payment may be requested to open an account for the victim.

If you believe you may have fallen victim to this scam, please contact the Polk County Sheriff’s Office at 863-298-6200. If you reside outside the PCSO jurisdiction, contact your local law enforcement agency.

Officials said anyone interested in purchasing U.S. Treasury bonds should do so via TreasuryDirect.gov, through the U.S. Treasury, or a trusted broker or banker
