16-year-old killed in Melbourne shooting

Shooter drove off in white vehicle, police say

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A 16-year-old died days after a shooting in Melbourne, police said in an update Thursday.

The shooting happened around 9:25 p.m. Saturday in the 900 block of Cedar Drive. Police said officers were called to the area and found the teen.

Annie Wigley said she heard screaming coming from the home of her teenage neighbor.

“I heard gunshots and I saw a bunch of people running and I heard the loudest scream I ever heard,” Annie Wigley said.

Annie Wigley, who is a nurse, said she helped emergency responders perform CPR.

A rescuer radioed the patient was 16 years old and suffered a gunshot wound to the back of the head.

He was taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Annie Wigley and her husband, Pastor Bernard Wigley, said the teen is in the ICU and on a ventilator. The pastor said the teen belongs to his church and works for his landscaping business.

“He takes care of his brothers and sisters. There’s about eight or nine of his siblings and he’s very responsible,” he said.

Next-door neighbor Martha Deboe also said the victim is a Palm Bay High School student.

“I hope whoever it is, they turn themselves in,” Deboe said.

Police have not identified a shooter, but said they took off in a white Nissan Maxima before they arrived.

A day after that shooting, Melbourne police responded to Xavier Avenue, only about two miles away, where Scott Lambert said he heard gunfire coming from his neighbor’s house.

“I never thought I’d be ducking bullets,” he said.

Police said that no one was shot.

Back on Cedar Drive, neighbors placed flowers and candles as they prayed the teenager pulls through.

“Only thing we can do is keep the family in prayer,” Deboe said. “It’s left up to the lord.”
