ORLANDO, Fla. – A 35-year-old man is missing off the coast of Florida after going overboard from a Carnival cruise ship, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Officials said Tuesday that crews were searching for the man, who went overboard about 186 miles east of Jacksonville while traveling aboard the Carnival Magic cruise ship, which sails from Miami and Norfolk, Virginia.
The man’s companion reported him missing late Monday afternoon, officials said. Security video on the ship shows that the man “leaned over the railing of his stateroom balcony and dropped into the water” around 4 a.m., according to authorities.
Carnival said the Coast Guard released the ship from search efforts and told the captain to head back to port in Norfolk.
The ship can hold nearly 4,000 guests and is about 1,000 feet long.
No other details have been provided.
