Family calls for Orlando police officer records amid Derek Diaz killing

Derek Diaz was shot and killed on July 3

ORLANDO, Fla. – The family of Derek Diaz held a rally in front of the state attorney’s office Friday afternoon calling for the personnel file of the officer who shot Diaz during a downtown Orlando patrol almost three weeks ago, killing him.

“Release the officer’s personnel files, we need to know if there’s any more complaints,” said community activist Lawanna Gelzer during the rally.

Orlando Police released body camera video of the shooting on July 12.

It shows the officer who opened fire, who police identify as Jose Velez, and two other officers confronting Diaz as he’s sitting in his car, near Jefferson Street and Orange Avenue.

Instantly after the shooting, the officer backs away. And moments later, Diaz is pulled out of the car and the officer begins doing chest compressions.

The family is asking for Officer Velez’s personnel file.

It’s the family’s latest call for answers in the case. In the past, the family has said Orlando police have not given them information related to the case. They also called for the early release of the bodycam video.

“Do the right thing city of Orlando, release the information, stop holding the information,” said Gelzer.
