LAKE NONA, Fla. – A huge undertaking is underway as a man tries to recruit 100 adults to donate a kidney for a child in need.
Every night, 2-year-old Kryzian Santos undergoes 8-to-10 hours of kidney dialysis. To maintain his health, his family must also regularly visit Nemours Children’s Hospital in Lake Nona.
“Of course, I have a very good support system that includes my family and my medical support team — my dream team,” said Rolena Santos, the boy’s mother.
Ten years ago, Brian Martindale donated a kidney to a child. Now, he’s traveling the country to find 100 adults willing to donate a kidney.
“Last year, after seeing the need, which I really wasn’t aware of before that, the national need for children, 1,100 kids today need a kidney transplant. I decided I should advocate for kids,” Martindale said.
So far, Martindale’s campaign has made seven matches. Another three volunteers are undergoing testing to find out whether they’ll be suitable donors.
An adult kidney is suitable for transplant into a child who’s at least 2 years old.
Kryzian Santos’ doctor said there’s an urgent need for volunteers.
“There’s a shortage of organs, which is why we advocate for a living donation when possible,” said Dr. Nisha Mathews, a pediatric nephrologist with Nemours Children’s Hospital.
