SWAT team arrests barricaded Polk County man accused of shooting into the air

Man barricaded himself inside home in Alturas, deputies said

POLK COUNTY, Fla. – A Polk County man has been arrested Monday after barricading himself inside of a home, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies said they received reports about the man, 33-year-old Victor Garcia, who had been yelling and shooting a firearm into the air before retreating inside the home. Residents in the area told deputies they heard about eight gunshots.

At around 12:01 p.m., deputies responded to the home in Alturas, which is south of State Road 60 near South Hankin Road, according to a release.

“After several hours of negotiating with Garcia to surrender, around 5:00 p.m. the SWAT team introduced chemical agent into the home, and he came outside and was taken into custody without incident,” the sheriff’s office said in a release.

No additional information has been provided, including the man’s identity or what prompted him to shoot into the air.

Garcia faces charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, unlawful discharge of a firearm in a residential area, unlawful display of a firearm, culpable negligence, and resisting arrest. He also faces charges of operating unpermitted landfill, unpermitted waste tire collection, unlawful disposal of dead animal, possession of marijuana, and “other crimes related to the extreme amount of trash, waste, and burned items in his yard.”
