Sanford neighbors plea for suspect to turn himself in; police say he killed cousin over a woman

Marquez Henderson, 26, accused of killing Jarkevis Canada

SANFORD, Fla. – Sanford Police is asking the public’s help to locate Marquez Henderson, who police say shot and killed his cousin after a disagreement over a woman.

The shooting was reported just after 8 p.m. Saturday at Georgia Arms Apartments, located at 2600 Georgia Ave., police said.

When police arrived, they said they found one man shot. The man was later to be identified as 24-year-old Jarkevis Canada.

Starregina Lawrence is a community activist and friend of the family and tells News 6 she saw the moments police tried to save Canada.

“When the police pulled up,” Lawrence said. “He immediately jumped out of his car and went to doing CPR on that baby like he was one of his own children.”

Canada was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died.

Investigators say both Henderson and Canada are cousins and say it was an argument over a woman that lead to the shooting.

Lawrence says the pair of men come from good families. “(It) just went the wrong way, could’ve been handled differently,” Lawrence said.

Court records show Henderson currently has a court appearance coming in October.

In that incident, Henderson faces 2 separate felony charges of computer solicitation of a child and using a computer to lure a child.

“We don’t want him to do anything to provoke the police,” said Lawrence who says the family and community are calling on Henderson to turn himself in, saying this is a tragedy for both families who want to get results so they can start to heal.

“The family is hurting, you know friend, the community is hurt because it’s another youth, it’s another senseless murder,” Lawrence said.

Officers are currently looking for Henderson as their investigation continues.

If you know anything about Henderson or his whereabouts you are encouraged to call Sanford police at 407-688-5070.
