LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – Lake County is hoping to get more homeowners to give up their septic tanks for the sake of the environment, and they’re offering funding to help do so.
The county has a new septic tank conversion program that helps homeowners remove their septic tanks and connect to the county’s wastewater treatment system.

The county said septic tanks have been shown to be a major source of nutrient pollution in the state’s waterways. The tanks can leach chemicals into the soil, which ends up in the water.

When the septic tank is removed, the system is replaced with a miniature wastewater treatment unit installed underground. The cost to connect the system will be covered by the county, as funding permits.
Installation takes about a day, and plumbing would be down for less than two hours, according to the county.
For homeowners, wastewater services will cost $660 per year and be included in the home’s property tax assessment.
