POLK COUNTY, Fla. – An Uber driver in Florida was arrested Tuesday night, accused of using a rental car that he wasn’t paying for to pick up passengers, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Elijah Mills, 27, of Maitland was stopped by Polk County deputies on U.S. 27 in Davenport while driving a couple in a Chevrolet Equinox.

In a Facebook post, the sheriff’s office states the Equinox was a rented vehicle, not Mills’, and the rental company had reported it stolen because he stopped making payments.

Mills, according to the sheriff’s office, acknowledged that the rental company called every day and he refused to answer because he knew they wanted their money.

To get around a device in the vehicle that the company can trigger remotely to keep it from restarting, Mills kept the Equinox running for three straight weeks, the post reads.

Mills faces charges of grand theft of a motor vehicle and driving while license suspended or revoked.

The couple who were passengers in the car — in town from the United Kingdom ahead of their wedding — got a ride from deputies back to where they were staying.
