‘Right into the path:’ Surveillance video shows SUV, Brightline collision in Melbourne

1 killed in wreck; several others injured

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Melbourne police continue to investigate a deadly crash involving a Brightline train.

Surveillance video from Island Tile & Marble shows the crash on WH Jackson Street just off U.S. 1.

News 6′s Ezzy Castro and traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero went through the images.

“This video alone shows the driver intentionally went around a stopped vehicle and right into the path of that train,” Montiero said.

Officers said there were a total of four people inside the SUV. The male driver was killed at the scene and the three other victims, including a juvenile, were rushed to the hospital.

“There are so many questions leading up to this crash,” Montiero explained.

Witness Jacob Hungerford was working at a warehouse nearby when he heard the crash. He then rushed to help the people inside the SUV.

“The guardrails had gone down and they were waiting to go, and this car was in a rush or something we don’t really know exactly what happened, but he went around, and I guess he thought he could beat the train and the train didn’t hit him, he ran into the train,” Hungerford said.

Police have not released the names of those involved.
