MARION COUNTY, Fla. – A teen was extradited Wednesday to Marion County to face charges stemming from a shooting during an attempted carjacking at a gas station in July 2023, according to sheriff’s officials.
The shooting happened July 5 at the Petro Travel Center gas station on Highway 318 near Interstate 75. Jaquavius McClain faces charges of attempted homicide, attempted carjacking with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a person under 18 years of age.
According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, McClain hopped out of a GMC pickup along with Christopher Riley, 29, who also faces charges, and targeted a man and woman who were parked at the gas pumps.
Deputies said Riley grabbed a gun from McClain and fired twice at the man, hitting him once in the head. The two then drove off in the pickup, which was stolen during an armed carjacking in Georgia earlier that day, according to investigators.
Riley and McClain were found in the truck on July 7, 2023, in Georgia and were both arrested.
Riley will be extradited to Marion County, deputies said, though a date has not been provided.
