MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Miami Beach police conducted an investigation Tuesday afternoon after they said a fetus washed ashore on North Beach, according to WPLG-TV in Miami.

Miami Beach police confirmed detectives were at the scene of a death investigation around 1:30 p.m. near the 7900 block of the beach after a beachgoer witnessed the fetus and alerted officials.

WPLG helicopter Sky 10 flew over the scene just after 3 p.m. and showed officers removing the remains off the sand while closing the area.

Police were also seen placing a box over the human remains as their investigation continued.

A medical examiner took the fetus for further examination to determine his or her age and if any injuries caused the death of the child.

“A medical assessment will better guide us as to how old the fetus was, but based on our observation, it does appear to be a fetus and does not appear to have been born, but these are speculations at this time,” said Miami Beach Police Officer Christopher Bess.

No other information was immediately released.
