Brevard couple saved from lagoon are now searching for their rescuers

Boat filled with young men arrived to help couple taking on water

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A couple in Brevard County is searching for a group of young men who helped save them from the frigid waters of the Indian River Lagoon in Melbourne over the weekend.

William Goodman and Gina Langley said they were with their dog Blue on Saturday at about 7 p.m., which is when their boat started to take on water.

“To be honest, I don’t know what we were trying to do. We were trying to stay out of the water. I mean, because the water was cold,” Goodman said. “Pretty much when the water was to the center console, I knew it wasn’t going to go anymore.”

Then, the couple said a boat appeared while they were still on the phone with Brevard County dispatch.

The boat, filled with a group of young men, began to help the couple out of the water and were even willing to take their place if there wasn’t room.

“Two of the young men started to take off their clothes and stuff like that, and their hoodies off, life vests on,” Langley said. “I sent the dog to the boat. They pulled him up. They didn’t see the dog at first. Blue swam back to me. At this point, I had climbed up where he was on top of the boat. Then, Blue jumped up back with me, and I was like, ‘Just go.’”

The couple said they weren’t able to get the names of the men who rescued them. They are trying to find the men to thank them in person.

“Would we have lasted another 25 minutes? She would have. Me, I have MS. My body was just, it was done,” Goodman said.

The couple also said they are still working on removing their boat from the lagoon.
