‘Pretty crazy:’ Florida man taken into custody after climbing cell tower, livestreaming

Incident happened near 13000 block of Rhodine Road

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – A Florida man was arrested over the weekend after climbing a cell tower in Hillsborough County, according to the sheriff’s office.

In a release, deputies said law enforcement was called to the 13000 block of Rhodine Road around 7 p.m. on Saturday after reports about the man climbing the tower.

Deputies identified the man and responded to the site, where the man was climbing back down after live-streaming on social media, the release shows.

After he reached the ground, he was taken into custody, the sheriff’s office explained.

“Our aviation unit and deputies continue to exemplify our commitment to safety,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said. “Their expertise and quick action ensured a potentially dangerous situation was resolved safely. We’re proud of their dedication to keeping our community safe.”

Aviation and body-camera footage released by the sheriff’s office shows the encounter on the ground.

“You made it all the way to the top-top?” a responding deputy can be heard asking the man.

“Yeah,” the man replies.

“That’s pretty crazy,” the deputy responds.

No additional information was provided, including the man’s name or any potential charges he might be facing.
