Zoo officials said that Sammy, a two-toed sloth, gave birth on March 14.

According to the release, since the newborn is with it’s mom all day, the zoo’s veterinary staff will not perform any exams anytime soon, so they aren’t yet sure the gender of the baby.

“The baby sleeps most of the time but will sometimes open their eyes to look around. Then, it’s right back to napping or nursing,” said Assistant Curator of Animals, Sidnee Santana-Mellor.

Officials said that Sammy has previously delivered three babies before and is “an expert caretaker.”

According to the release, the baby will stay holding onto Sammy for about six months to a year and start to explore after a couple of months.

Hours after giving birth, the mom and baby were back out on habitat and taking snacks from her animal care team.
