While Williams loves the beauty and accessibility of the area, he said there are concerns about Lake Monroe’s water quality.

Sanford declared a health emergency in February to make funds available for immediate maintenance of its two water treatment facilities.

In January, documents show the city notified the state of a massive 13 million-gallon sewage leak into Lake Monroe.

“It kind of bothers me, because I think they might have contaminated the fish,” Williams said.

Kristina Quehl has lived in Sanford for 15 years and often takes her daughter, Emma, to Fort Melon Park.

“I love the area. I love the lakes, the nature,” Quehl said. “We love it here. The community’s great.”

Quehl said she has mixed feelings about the area’s growth, but said the city is doing well to keep up with the region’s demands.

“Being in an area that is being developed, it’s nice to see that it’s up and coming and not just overgrown fields, but in the same place we’re taking a lot of homes away from animals,” Quehl said.
