OneBlood seeks blood donors amid spring break shortage

ORLANDO, Fla. – Each morning on “Breakfast with Bridgett” there are interesting stories and interviews, plus weather and traffic to plan your day.

Today, Pat Michaels from OneBlood, called in live from their donation center in Downtown Orlando. He talked about shortages that happen around this time of year due to spring break and summer break. Michaels says donations from high school and college blood drives actually make up a big chunk of the supply - almost 20%.

There is also a wide difference between the number of people overall who can and do give blood.

“We always want people to come in and donate when they’re eligible,” said Michaels. “Most people are eligible to donate. Sixty percent are eligible but only 5 to 10 percent do. That’s a big gap.”
