Melbourne man, 81, dies after suffering possible medical episode while driving, police say

Crash occurred in area of Parkway Drive, Croton Road

MELBOURNE, Fla. – An 81-year-old Melbourne man died after his involvement in a single-vehicle crash Saturday morning, according to the Melbourne Police Department.

The crash occurred around 11:30 a.m. in the area of Parkway Drive and Croton Road, police said.

According to a news release, the man — identified as Gary Hurd —was driving a 2012 Nissan Frontier westbound on Parkway Drive, approaching Croton Road, when he possibly suffered a medical episode and drove off the roadway to the right, striking a standing tree at the northwest corner of the intersection.

Hurd succumbed to his injuries several hours later at Melbourne Regional Medical Center, the release states.

Alcohol or drugs were not factors in the crash and Hurd was the Nissan’s only occupant, police said.
