ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – An Orange County deputy shot a man at an apartment complex who was allegedly holding a gun, pointing it at people and at one point fired it Friday night, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies responded around 10:30 p.m. to the 3000 block of U.K. Circle, within the Indigo Winter Park Apartments along South Semoran Boulevard, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

The deputies heard one gunshot upon their arrival and encountered the man, seeing that he was still holding a gun, the statement reads. One of the deputies then shot the man, to whom aid was rendered until he was taken to a hospital in critical condition, the sheriff’s office said, adding the man’s firearm was recovered.

In a video statement shared early Saturday, Sheriff John Mina said the man was in surgery. The sheriff reported no other injuries.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting before turning its findings over to the state attorney’s office, after which the sheriff’s office will conduct its own internal investigation, Mina said.

The deputy who fired their weapon was placed on temporary, paid administrative leave pending the initial FDLE review, according to the statement.
