MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. – The Florida Department of Transportation held a public information meeting in Melbourne Beach on Thursday about a project to construct new pedestrian walkways.
FDOT conducted a traffic study, which then prompted the agency to propose the crosswalks along A1A at both Oceanway Drive and Solway Drive.
“I think it’s very nice we have the flashing others, but we have a lot of people who just don’t pay attention. They don’t. A lot of people don’t care,” resident Theresa Dean said.
The lights would flash red when a pedestrian walks across.

“That might get people’s attention,” said resident Cheryl Williams. “I wouldn’t go in front of these cars because they don’t pay attention.”
FDOT said it’s important to get input from people in the area.
“This meeting is for that purpose. We are trying to reach out to the locals and the public,” Todd Alexander with FDOT said.
