Passengers on Florida-bound Spirit flight told to prepare for water landing

Airbus safely returned to Montego Bay, Jamaica

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Passengers aboard a Spirit Airlines flight from Jamaica to Florida were told to prepare for a possible water landing after the aircraft was turned around because of an apparent mechanical problem, CNN.com reported.

The Airbus, headed to Fort Lauderdale, safely returned to Montego Bay, Jamaica, “out of an abundance of caution following a suspected mechanical issue,” the airline said.

The passengers were deplaned and reached Fort Lauderdale on another airplane.

A passenger told CNN that the cabin was a scene of chaos.

“It was scary, and people were freaking out and panicking,” the passenger said.

Video taken by the passenger shows life vests scattered on the floor and seats.

“Safety is our top priority, and the aircraft will be thoroughly evaluated by our maintenance team,” the airline said. “We apologize to our guests for any inconvenience.”
