ORLANDO, Fla. – Everyday on Breakfast with Bridgett, there’s weather and traffic, top headlines and a little coffee talk on things that matter.

Bridgett talked to Dr. L. Trenton Marsh, an assistant professor of urban education at UCF. He’s part of an initiative with Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida supporting our local youth.

The “H.O.P.E.” Circle stands for “Healing Oasis for Peace and Empowerment.” The group formed to help kids process their grief and take a stand against gun violence after losing three club members to senseless violence. They recently hosted the 3rd annual Day of H.O.P.E. This year, the theme focused on youth mental health.

Marsh says the group meets weekly to help youth members address challenges they’re facing in everyday life, such as healthy ways to deal with bullying.

“Slow down, let’s process what’s taking place in the context of this young man, OK, slow down, we’re not going to plan any hurt or harm on that individual, because it’s ultimately going to impact you. It’s going to unravel everything we’re talking about at HOPE Circle which is about unity, brotherhood, compassion for self and others. Because when I see young people engaging in bullying, there’s often a deficit, some insecurities, some lack of self confidence that they’re also impacted or facing,” Marsh said.
