News 6 finds discrepancy in Orlando City Council candidate Travaris McCurdy’s education

Spokesperson with FAMU said McCurdy attended in 2003 and 2004

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – The runoff election for the Orlando City Council District 5 seat is coming up, with contenders Shaniqua Rose and Travaris McCurdy set to appear on the ballot on June 18.

Rose previously spoke with News 6 reporter Treasure Roberts about her work history and disciplinary records with the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency.

McCurdy, who trailed behind Rose in the initial election, has a political background. He served as a Florida House representative from 2020 to 2022.

McCurdy’s bio on MyFloridaHouse.gov lists a bachelor’s degree in political science from Florida A&M University.

News 6 reached out to the university to check.

A spokesperson told News 6 he was enrolled in fall 2003 and spring 2004, majoring in general education.

News 6 has attempted to reach McCurdy and his campaign manager for clarification about the discrepancy regarding his education, but they have not provided comment.

McCurdy also had encounters with the law, including a 2009 charge of marijuana possession, to which he pleaded no contest.

Rose made herself available for an interview.

News 6 reporter Treasure Roberts called McCurdy and exchanged texts with his campaign manager for days to set up an interview, to no avail.

The candidates are competing for the seat previously held by Regina Hill, who faces accusations of exploiting an elderly woman.
