Psychiatrist talks ‘Inside Out 2′ and how to nurture your child’s emotional intelligence

ORLANDO, Fla. – Wednesday on Breakfast With Bridgett, we took a closer look at the emotional intelligence lessons in the new movie “Inside Out 2″ with a child psychiatrist!

Dr. Vivian Charneco is the medical director at Mindful Behavioral Healthcare and gives the movie two thumbs up for kids and adults, noting the unique way the film presents emotions and offers opportunities to unpack new feelings that growing children might be experiencing but can’t explain.

She says adults watching the film can benefit from some of their own self-reflection as well as the reminder to look for the emotional roots of their children’s behaviors rather than skipping straight to reprimand.

“We want to see our children happy all the time. Sometimes they will pout or get angry, we as parents will frown or reprimand our child like, ‘How could you say such a thing?’ or what not, rather than trying to understand what that feeling is about and actually being able to channel that feeling in a productive manner. So it’s really how you work around the feeling rather than the specific feeling itself,” she said.

Dr. Charneco says a variety of emotions is natural and a part of healthy development, but if parents and children are having trouble, behavioral therapy can help.

“Allow those emotions to be expressed and allowed for what they are. Like we saw in the movie, there are certain emotions labeled good and bad. Sometimes some of these emotions, they tend to overcome other emotions. All of the emotions are important, and they are necessary in being able to help with the development of who we are, our personality, our growth; and that there’s no bad emotion, per se. Even if you get angry, even if you get anxious, there’s a purpose for all of these emotions,” she said.
