ORLANDO, Fla. – Starting Monday, parents across the state will have the chance to save some money on school supplies with the return of what’s become an annual back to school sales tax holiday.
For two whole weeks, most school supplies $50 or less will be tax free.
Clothes, shoes, and bookbags that cost $100 or less will be tax free and personal computers $1,500 or less.
“It’s a legacy holiday. People look forward to it. They take advantage of it. They really take the opportunity to save. Our retailers are dialed into it. Our retailers are ready and prepared to have supplemental offerings to generate activity,” said Scott Shalley, president of the Florida Retail Federation.
The holiday is also a good opportunity to help get results for families who can not afford to buy school supplies for their children this year.
News 6′s Ezzy Castro spoke to CEO of Harbor House of Central Florida, Michelle Sperzel, on how to get results for the 75 children living at their emergency shelter.
The nonprofit is collecting donations this week, and Sperzel said they need things like bookbags, binders, socks, school uniforms, and hand sanitizer.
“As far as the ages of the kids, yeah it’s everything from grade school all the way up to high school. We are even asking people for middle schoolers and even high schoolers. We’re asking for full size backpacks,” Sperzel said.
Donations can be dropped off at 708 E. Colonial Drive, Suite 202, Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
