EUSTIS, Fla. – More school zone speed cameras have been installed at two more schools in Eustis.
Eustis High School and the Eustis High School Curtright Campus now have school zone speed cameras.
Eustis Police Chief Craig Capri spent Monday morning at Eustis Elementary as students went back to the classroom for the first day.
“There’s going to be some people getting some tickets and they need them from what I saw here today,” Capri said.
“Eustis Elementary also happens to be the first school where school zone speed cameras were installed earlier this year. Over 1,300 citations issued, now we got roughly two months off, so people hopefully didn’t forget the cameras are out there,” Capri said. “School starts, it starts today, the cameras are on and they are live. So we hope people adhere to the speed limits and slow down. Let’s get our kids to school safely.”
Parents with students at Eustis Elementary School where the cameras have been in place say they fully support this as a way to keep kids safe.
“It’s completely necessary,” Tanisha Piper said. “There are a lot of kids that walk to school every day. And I understand, you know, the getting to work on time and things like that, but you are not the only one that’s on the road.”
Bianca Goldwire was dropping off her daughter for her first day of second grade on Monday.
“I am really happy to know that at least I feel a little bit safer knowing that they’re cracking down on that,” Goldwire said.
Capri said several agencies across Florida have now reached out to try to implement the cameras in their school zones.
“Everybody’s getting on board with this program,” Capri said. “It’s a great program. It’s going to save lives at the end of the day. It’s going to save lives and protect our children.”
Eustis City Commissioner Emily Lee said the commission has been in favor of the cameras since day one.
“We know of incidents where kids have been injured and so whatever we could do, we were supportive of it,” Lee said.
The 30-day warning period for the cameras officially began on Monday. After that it becomes a speeding violation with a $100 fine.
Drivers have the opportunity to either appeal or pay the ticket within 30 days. If they don’t do anything, it becomes a moving violation and results in points on your license.
The cameras are active the entire school day from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every day of the week except Wednesday when they are only active until 2:30 p.m. Drivers could still get a citation if they are found speeding during those times on school days.
Capri said he hopes to have more cameras installed on Bay Street for Eustis Height Elementary School by the end of the school year.
