MAITLAND, Fla. – An iconic Central Florida sub shop opened up its doors for the last time on Saturday.
Kappy’s Subs in Maitland has withstood the test of time, serving Central Floridians for more than 50 years.
Hours before the sub shop was set to open its doors on Saturday, the parking lot was full and people were waiting in line all to make sure they get one last taste of a signature Kappy’s cheesesteak.
Pamela Moore said the cheesesteak is what she’ll miss the most about Kappy’s.
“That’s exactly what I am going to get,” Moore said.

Moore, who now lives in Mascotte, used to live in Casselberry. She said she wanted to be there for Kappy’s last day.
“I’ve planned this all week, all week to come here Saturday morning,” Moore said. “That was the deal.”
Others didn’t have to travel quite as far, like Allie Witherspoon who lives in Altamonte Springs.
Witherspoon said when she first moved here from Ohio, she heard about Kappy’s.
“I thought it was great, they have like one of the best sandwiches, so any time I have friends or family visiting out of state, I recommend Kappy’s,” Witherspoon said.
Witherspoon told us several things she thinks makes Kappy’s special.
“It’s family owned, it’s been here for a very long time, and the staff is really super sweet,” Witherspoon said. “You can tell they put all their love and hard work into their food and there’s nothing else like it.”
As far as next steps for the iconic sub shop, the owners said in a post on Facebook they’re evaluating their options but are asking for grace as they figure things out.
