Can I make a right turn if I accidentally use my left blinker?

News 6 viewers ask traffic questions

ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road every week, helping Orlando-area residents become better drivers by being better educated.

Tuesday’s question asked of Trooper Steve was: “If I am making a left turn, but have my right turn signal on, can I still make my left turn?”

“This is a very odd question,” Trooper Steve said. “The turn signal is an indicator and not in control of the vehicle -- you are.”

“A driver should use the proper indication when making either a left or right turn. If a driver was in a right-turn lane and preparing to make a right turn, but accidentally had their left turn signal on, please make the right turn,” he added.

A driver’s physical actions are more important than the indicators.

“Although I want drivers to both indicate and drive properly, I would hate for a driver to overcorrect and cause a crash,” Trooper Steve said.
