ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando first responders got hands-on special training at Orlando Health’s Jewett Orthopedic Institute.
In groups, they got to work on human cadavers in an effort to help better prepare for real-world emergencies.
Lieutenant Philip Graziani with the Orlando Fire Department demonstrated to News 6′s Ezzy Castro what it’s like to use cadaver tissue during the training and the importance of educating crews.
“It’s really important for us to be able to train on real tissue because again it’s something we don’t get to do every day. Real tissue reacts differently than mannequins do,” Graziani said.
The four-day training educates firefighters and paramedics on different life-saving measures using real body tissue.
“We think of our patients that are in cardiac arrest. Individuals that need us to do lifesaving interventions for them such as breathe for them or put a tube in their throat to breathe for them,” Graziani said.
On a daily basis, Orlando Health said doctors and orthopedic residents use the lab for training as well.
“Something that means to me is to see the confidence grow and they are way more confident walking out of the lab than when they walk in,” Brandon Lopez with Orlando Health said.
