‘Life-or-death:’ 14-year-old found fatally shot in Marion County subdivision

Deputies ID victim as Marshaun Jones

MARION COUNTY, Fla. – A 14-year-old was found shot to death Wednesday evening in a Marion County subdivision, prompting a homicide investigation, deputies said.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said Marshaun Jones was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound in the 15000 block of SW 48th Avenue in the Marion Oaks subdivision.

MCSO Lt. Paul Bloom told News 6 that investigators were still trying to determine whether the shooting was accidental or even justified.

“We wanna make sure that no stone is left unturned...” he said. “This is not a random act of violence.”

Bloom also stressed the importance of parents being involved in their child’s life.

“Be in their business. Know what they’re doing. Know who they’re with,” he urged. “Know what their social media is doing, who they’re talking to, and what they’re doing on social media. It’s a life-or-death situation.”

Sheriff’s officials said detectives are continuing their investigation into what has been ruled a homicide and are asking anyone with information about the incident to call Detective Jason Williams at 352-369-6715. To remain anonymous, call CrimeStoppers of Marion County at 352-368-STOP (7867) and reference tip number 24-35.

No other details have been released.
